I want to be a part of it.
We all know NYC is the coolest city in the world and as proof just look at most peoples t-shirts. When was the last time you saw a Hong Kong, Stockholm or La Paz tshirt? I mean these are all cool cities too but New York has become almost a
brand, that’s how cool it is.
I started noticing this in Namibia and how many Namibians have New York tshirts, hoodies & caps.
I also wondered how many of them have actually been to New York or Brooklyn or Bronx? And btw they all fall under NYC.
The answer is none I photographed.
For over a year I have stopped and asked hundreds of people with New York tshirts to pose for me and asked them one simple question, Have you been to New York?
And all of them said no, some didn’t even know what was on their tshirts and some wished to go there one day.
I also noticed that some of the cheaper retail shops all sell New york tshirts in all different styles and ages.
I have been photographing them using whatever camera or phone I had so these portraits are a mixture of phone, digital point and shoot and 35mm film camera.
I have stopped photographing people now because it can become obsessive and
it’s all I see.
